Un viaggio tra materiali, estetica e saperi tradizionali del Regno dell’Arabia Saudita, dove l’artigianato diventa ponte tra memoria e contemporaneità.
Prosegue a Venezia il programma dello Spazio Culturale Saudita con “The Year of Handicrafts: Craftsmanship, Materials, and Aesthetics of Saudi Arabia”, una mostra che celebra le tradizioni viventi e il patrimonio artigianale del Regno dell’Arabia Saudita.
Attraverso una selezione di manufatti, testimonianze visive e narrazioni regionali, l’esposizione accompagna il visitatore in un viaggio attraverso le tredici regioni del Regno, ciascuna rappresentata da uno dei suoi mestieri più iconici. Dalla tessitura all’intaglio del legno, dalla ceramica al ricamo, la mostra mette in luce tecniche, materiali e sensibilità estetiche che definiscono l’identità culturale di ogni territorio.
Al centro del racconto emerge il principio che “Craft is alive”: un’idea che trova espressione negli artigiani e nelle artigiane che mantengono vivi saperi secolari, reinterpretandoli in chiave contemporanea. Particolare rilievo è dato all’Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, riconosciuto dall’UNESCO come Patrimonio Culturale Immateriale dell’Umanità, una pratica artistica femminile diffusa nella regione di Asir, dove motivi geometrici e colori simbolici decorano gli spazi domestici, custodendo una memoria culturale che attraversa le generazioni.
La mostra presenta anche un murale informativo del Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (WRTH), che documenta il percorso formativo di studenti e diplomati attraverso fotografie e creazioni dei loro laboratori. Il progetto testimonia l’impegno del Regno nel tramandare le arti tradizionali e nel sostenere la nuova generazione di artigiani, valorizzando il patrimonio culturale e creativo saudita.

Culture: The Year of Saudi Handicrafts on Display in Venice
In Venice, “The Year of Handicrafts” showcases Saudi Arabia’s cultural heritage through craftsmanship, creativity, and innovation.
The Saudi Cultural Space in Venice continues its program with “The Year of Handicrafts: Craftsmanship, Materials, and Aesthetics of Saudi Arabia,” an exhibition celebrating the living traditions and artisanal heritage of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Through a curated selection of handcrafted objects, visual testimonies, and regional narratives, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey across the Kingdom’s thirteen regions — each represented by one of its most iconic crafts. From weaving to woodcarving, from ceramics to embroidery, the show highlights the techniques, materials, and aesthetic sensibilities that define each region’s cultural identity.
At the heart of the narrative lies the idea that “Craft is alive” — embodied by the craftspeople who preserve centuries-old skills while adapting them to the contemporary world. A special focus is dedicated to Al-Qatt Al-Asiri, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity: a traditional art form practiced by Asiri women who decorate domestic spaces with geometric motifs and symbolic colors, preserving a cultural memory passed down through generations.
The exhibition also features an informative mural created by the Royal Institute of Traditional Arts (WRTH), illustrating the journey of students and graduates through photographs and works from their workshops.
